Jamie Lynn Spears caught everyone’s attention earlier this year with her debut single “How Could I Want More.” The song showed a side to the sister of pop princess Brittney Spears that garnered the young singer a host of country music fans. Then in May, Spears released an independent EP, The Journey, showcasing impressive songwriting and vocal talent. We caught up with Spears to talk about life as an independent artist and her upcoming performance at the “Everyday Heroes” event benefiting men and women of service this Saturday in New Jersey.
NYC Country Music Lovers: Tell us about your musical influences and how you came to country music?
Spears: Growing up in the south, country music had a big influence on me. I grew up listening to Alan Jackson and Loretta Lynn – all the greats. I really love Garth Brooks. He is so passionate about what he does and always puts on a great show. I love the honesty of the songs. I think that’s what drew me to country music.
NYC Country Music Lovers: Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Spears: There are so many artists I’d love to collaborate with both inside and outside the genre. I got to open up for Alan Jackson earlier this year which was great. It would be cool to do something with another female in country music. I worked with Pam Tillis and I’d love to do something with Loretta Lynn.
NYC Country Music Lovers: What is the story behind your latest single “How Could I Want More?”
Spears: It’s a very personal song that I wrote about my husband. I wrote it about 4 years ago and it was just about me figuring out my next steps and what I wanted in my life. It was about how I had the perfect man right in front of me and how could I want more than that. Well, now we are married and its 4 years down the road. It’s one of those songs that really came full circle.
NYC Country Music Lovers: You are currently releasing music independently. What are your thoughts about writing, recording and putting music out independent of a major label?
Spears: It’s definitely harder, but it allows you to have more freedom and control over your music. Without a big label behind you it can be hard to compete but I really felt like for me, as an artist telling my story, this is the only way it could be done.
NYC Country Music Lovers: You are performing this Saturday in New Jersey at the “Everyday Heroes” Event. What does “Everyday Heroes” mean to you?
Spears: This event is a great way to give back to those people who make sacrifices and give when they don’t have to. These people continue to inspire and give to their community. There is just so many people we need to give thanks to and show our appreciation for.
NYC Country Music Lovers: What is your favorite thing about NYC?
Spears: I really love New York City around the holidays and Christmas time. There’s such a great spirit about it. The city has an amazing energy.
